Introduction to VR equipment

For great full-360 photography, you need a Digital Camera, Fisheye Lens, Panohead and Tripod.

VRstitcher Fisheye Pro stitches the 3 different fisheye image types created in full-360 photography:

VR Equipment Summary

Digital SLR Camera

Digital SLR cameras, give photographers the best of both worlds; high quality full-360 images, plus SLR lens flexibility.

Fisheye Lens and Adaptor

A fisheye lens is an extreme wide angle lens, that captures 180° in all directions (circular fisheye), or 180° across the diagonal (full-frame fisheye).

dSLR photographers can use either the 180° circular fisheye lens, or the full-frame, diagonal fisheye lens.

A full-360 spherical panorama is created by stitching together 2 or 3 circular fisheye photos, 4 cropped circular fisheyes, or 6 full-frame fisheye shots.

Panohead Rotator and Tripod

A PanoHead rotator and tripod, aligns the fisheye lens/camera so the photos may be taken at precise intervals.

Attached to the tripod when shooting, it eliminates the displacements between hemispheres and ensuring seamless stitching.

PanoHead rotators are available for digital SLR cameras, as part of the VRstitcher Full-360 Kit.

Fisheye Image Formats

Digital SLR cameras - Cropped circular fisheye images

Cropped fisheye images are created when a circular fisheye lens (eg Sigma 8mm fisheye), is used with a digital SLR camera.

Because the focal length multiplier of most dSLR cameras is greater than 1, the edges of the circular fisheye become cropped.

Therefore, while 180° is captured vertically, less than 180° is captured horizontally.

This means that in order to get full-360 coverage horizontally, 4 shots are required.

Digital SLR cameras - Full-frame fisheye images

Full-frame fisheye images capture 180° view across the diagonal of the image, using lenses including the Nikon 10.5mm and the Sigma 15mm.

As a result, 6 shots are typically required to capture a complete 360° horizontal view.

Because full-frame fisheye images do not capture 180° vertically, they do not produce a complete floor-to-ceiling view.

The main advantage of the full-frame fisheyes, is the very high resolution panorama that can be achieved.
